Social, environmental and climate sustainability are critical for IFAD to achieve its mandate.
IFAD's Social, Environmental and Climate Assessment Procedures?(SECAP) provide guidance on how to identify potential risks and impacts, and how to avoid, minimize, reduce or mitigate them. It ensures that appropriate preventative actions are incorporated into project design and implementation, and provides guidance on procurement implications.
SECAP describes IFAD’s key mainstreaming themes (youth, gender, nutrition, environment and climate) and encompasses nine social, environmental and climate standards that guide IFAD-supported projects: biodiversity conservation; resource efficiency and pollution prevention; cultural heritage; Indigenous Peoples; labour and working conditions; community health and safety; physical and economic resettlement; financial intermediaries and direct investments; and climate change.
Moreover, SECAP highlights opportunities for maximizing development gains by incorporating environmental, social and climate solutions throughout the project cycle which in turn promotes buy-in from borrowers and partners.
IFAD’s Complaints Procedure?(for projects approved before September 2021) and Enhanced Complaints Procedure?(for projects approved in or after September 2021) ensure that people who believe they are, or might be, adversely affected by an IFAD-funded project that is not complying with IFAD's?SECAP can file a complaint.
Our?Incident Procedure?is used to report serious incidents related to environmental, social, health and safety practices and accidents during the implementation of IFAD-financed activities.
